Capability
Platforms whose player caches content locally and carries on when the connection goes, rather than showing a black screen or an error.

Every network fails eventually, and the difference between platforms is what the screen shows while it is down. A player that caches its playlist locally carries on as though nothing happened. One that streams from the cloud shows a spinner, an error page, or the desktop underneath, in a shop window, for as long as the outage lasts.
This matters most in exactly the places signage earns its money: retail parks on flaky broadband, transit sites, venues where the network is somebody else’s responsibility. It matters less on a corporate wall three metres from the switch.
Two things separate a real offline mode from a claimed one. The first is whether scheduling survives the outage, so the screen still changes at the right times rather than freezing on whatever was playing. The second is what happens on reconnect: a player that quietly resyncs is doing its job, and one that needs a visit is not.
