Digital signage software for Linux

Signage platforms with a Linux player, from packaged installs on standard distributions to purpose-built images.

Linux is the default answer when the hardware is already decided and it is not one of the appliance ecosystems. It covers mini PCs, industrial boxes, thin clients and anything else that will boot a standard distribution, which makes it the most flexible option here and the one that asks the most of you.

Support splits into two shapes worth telling apart. Some platforms publish a package for named distributions and versions, which means somebody there tests against them. Others say “Linux” and mean a browser in kiosk mode on whatever you have, which works until a graphics driver update changes what full-screen video does. The first is a supported player; the second is a supported browser.

The work Linux hands back to you is the work an appliance does silently: autostart on boot, recovery after a power cut, screen blanking disabled, automatic updates that do not land mid-afternoon, and a way in when the machine is behind a shop counter. None of it is hard and all of it is yours.
