BrightSign is not an operating system anybody chose for its own sake. It is the one a large share of the CMS in this directory integrated with first, so standardising on it is the safest bet available on which software you will be able to run in five years. That is the entire argument, and it is a good one.
The players do only one thing. BrightSignOS runs a single signage application and nothing else, which removes the whole class of failure where a general purpose machine decides to update itself in the middle of trading hours. There is no desktop to fall back to, no browser to be left open and no antivirus scan. The trade is that you cannot install anything the platform did not anticipate.
It also reaches beyond BrightSign’s own boxes. LG builds BrightSignOS into some of its commercial panels, so the same CMS integrations are available with no player behind the screen at all.
